In this economy, rental businesses are leaving no stone unturned in the push for inventory utilization. When demand for traditional rentals declines, innovative thinking must prevail. Some of the larger rental companies have found ways to supplement their revenue with asset management and site support services for customers. There is nothing stopping small to mid-size rental operators from pursuing a similar strategy of value-added services. The main motivation for a rental business to engage in custom programming is that the end result will presumably fit the needs of the business hand-in-glove. However, the reality is that rental applications are extremely complex, and attempts at custom programming can come with substantial downsides.

It was great to see Vicki Blackwell honored for her industry service last week at the CRA’s Rental Rally. Vicki and her husband Dale have been CounterPro customers since 1997 at Aba Daba Rentals & Sales in Sacramento. From all of us at SBC — congratulations to Vicki on receiving the James Gartland Memorial Award!

Next week I’ll be north of the border at the Rental Mart, where I’m sure there will be plenty of buzz about Canada’s Olympic victory on the ice — what a great game. If you want to talk hockey or rental management systems, stop by Booth #304 and see Enfinity’s latest software release in action. I also want to give a shout-out to Andy Paquette, a long-time SBC customer (Bravo Rentals) and current Canadian Rental Association president. I got a kick out of reading about Andy’s “Adirondack chair challenge” in Moncton!
